Pick a board, any board.

I’ve always had a desire to impact my community. So, as I reached my late 20s, I was hoping to join a nonprofit organization as a member of their Board of Directors. I think back then I thought it was a smart career move—I’m a huge fan of networking and meeting new people (hello from a high “I”). But joining a board isn’t that easy, or, it shouldn’t be. Let me explain. Updated: As of September 2018, I am no longer serving on the Board of Directors for ProAct Indy. Continue reading

Meaningful mock interviews.

I’m just over my first ninety days in the agency world, and I’m loving almost every minute. The diversity in my clients and work that I’m doing ensure that no two days are ever the same. Take today for example, five coworkers and I got to host mock interviews for teenaged students participating in a summer workforce program. Little did I know, I’d be impacted just as much as one of the teens. Continue reading

Morning must—theSkimm.

As a public relations professional, part of my job is keeping a pulse on things. Ambiguous, I know, but seriously. Being mindful of happenings in client organizations and industries is essential, but it’s advantageous to also have a pulse on community news and national news when it comes to garnering media interest and being strategic. But staying informed isn’t easy or quick. Between daily news clips from our media monitoring platform—oh hey Cision!—Google Alerts, PRSA Issues & Trends, Creative Mornings Global, the IBJ’s Eight@8, and a few other local news outlets—I’m drowning in news! Hoosier Farmers’ Markets

When it comes to Hoosier farmers’ markets, all I need are the details—I’m there! Farmers’ markets are so vital to local economies. They support nearby farmers, invest dollars back into the local economy, and typically, they encourage a healthier diet with fresh harvested food. But I realized recently that as much as I love farmers’ markets, I don’t venture out enough of the nearby markets. So, over the course of the last few weeks, I did just that. And now, I’m ready to share some of my favorite aspects of four local markets along with a few things to consider before you visit. Continue reading

This summer is a weird one in my household. Don’t get me wrong, it’s going well, and the weather’s been beautiful for the most part. But it’s just not a typical summer around here. I’m finally getting settled into a new role, teaching two classes, and the whole one parent to one child ratio keeps our evenings pretty tied up. So, when I started thinking about a big vacation, I knew it was going to have to wait until Caiden and I adjusted to the new routine. Luckily, a random idea, suggestions from those around me, and a quick drive up north offered us an incredible weekend away. Continue reading

whole30 before 30.

Okay, so here’s the truth, I’ve known April 7th, 2018 was coming my entire life. But is it just me or did time speed up and *boom* now I’m approaching my 30th year? Don’t get me wrong, I’m blessed to see my thirtieth year and to usher in the next chapter. But, I was also determined to make some fundamental changes in who I am before my actual birthday arrived. Enter the Whole 30 before 30. Continue reading

GRLPWR

GRLPWR.

In the last two weeks, I’ve received two invitations to speak to groups of students. The first, to speak to a few classes of high school students at my alma mater about professional and career development. The second, to speak with a newly formed sixth grade girls’ empowerment club, who invited me to speak about being an influential woman in my community. These aren’t the first speaking opportunities to present themselves to me, but perhaps coming back-to-back they had me a little uneasy. I kept wondering what could I possibly talk to them about? What words could I find to inspire these students on their career paths? What have I done that’s made me an influential woman? What could I offer them, when I’m still figuring this whole life thing out myself? Continue reading

Ready to bake

Prepped and ready.

Over the last few weeks, life has very much been in transition! Embarking on the new job and the new normal around the house, it’s like the weeks have been flying by. Unfortunately, that also means that my schedule’s been off some. I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but when things are busy and life seems to be in between phases, the first thing I lose focus on is my fitness and nutrition! It’s a horrible habit, and now that I’m about a month in, I’m ready to add another layer and start prioritizing my physical activity and my meal plan. So, with President’s Day off, today was the perfect day to get prepped and ready!  Continue reading
